LaSalle Ambulance
1961 - 1995
Buffalo NY
Founded by: Douglas H. Baker

Acquired by Rural Metro 1-26-1995

Douglas H. Baker bought his first ambulance at age 19 and established LaSalle Ambulance in Buffalo NY. Lasalle Ambulance was incorporated on August 2, 1983. LaSalle quickly became a leader in the ambulance industry in western New York State. The innovations made by LaSalle Ambulance under Mr. Baker leadership made enormous contributions to the evolution of modern EMS in the US:

○ 1965 - Regional Radio Communications system - predecessor to MERS
○ 1974 - Paramedic Training Program
○ 1982 - Mobile Phone Telemetry system from ambulance to base hospitals.
○ 1985 - Computer aided Billing
○ 1989 - Computer aided Billing and Dispatch
○ 1993 - GPS Tracking
○ 1994 - LaSalle one of the earliest CAAS Accredited services

Revenues in 1994 were approximately $15 million. The company provided "911" and general ambulance service for the City of Buffalo, New York. LaSalle also operated a paramedic training school for both American and international pre-hospital medical students. LaSalle Ambulance was CAAS Accredited in 1994.

Mr. Baker sold LaSalle to Rural Metro in 1995.

About the Founder: Douglas H. Baker began running calls at an early age of 13, and bought his first ambulance in 1961 at age 19 founding LaSalle Ambulance in Buffalo NY. In 1965, Mr. Baker introduced a prototype radio system for ambulance to hospital communications in western New York (this was the prototype for MERS).

Between 1965 and 1980 Mr. Baker established several hospital based ambulance systems, including a MICU for pediatric transport. In 1974 he began a Paramedic training program. In 1979 he founded a fixed wing aircraft transport followed in 1981 by forming Mercy Flight in Western New York.

In 1982 Doug Baker instituted what is believed to be the first ambulance to hospital telemetry system between his ALS ambulances and their base hospitals. In 1985 he established one of the first computer aided billing systems for EMS. This was followed in 1989 with the development of "Datatrax Billing and Communications" software in a partnership with Microserv.

In 1993 Doug Baker adopted a GPS equipped tracking and dispatch system for his fleet of 42 vehicles, 2 Helicopters, and 1 fixed wing aircraft.

Doug Baker now owns Mercy Flight and Mercy EMS in Buffalo.
