This was a nationwide gathering of Search and Rescue (SAR) Explorers August 7-14th at the US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. Seventy workshops and hands-on sessions trained Explorers in emergency service and provided career information. Sessions included wildfire safety, urban rescue, wilderness survival, and hazardous materials emergencies. Off-site field courses included whitewater rescue, taught on the rapids of the Arkansas River; high-angle rope rescue, cave rescue, and fire pumper operations. A full competition schedule tested the Explorers' skills in areas such as map and compass orienteering, litter evacuation, and search strategies. A staged mass casualty incident at the end of the week sharpened the Explorers' new skills and ability to work together.
